This diverse group of speakers will be presenting on a range of interesting, timely and educational topics. In addition to presenting their informative talks, we invited each of the presenters to participate in the
Antique and Design Center's Tastemaker Program to share their favorite style finds and give us a little glimpse into what moves them about antiques and design. We think you'll be moved and inspired by the very beautiful images and words they shared.

What Moves Me
Spending summers at my grandparents' beautiful, historic home on the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, led to my love of antiques. What moved me, though, was not the beauty of the pieces themselves, but the stories embedded in them, the stories that I heard them whispering to me about my family's long ago history.
My imagination was ignited, as I thought about who had created these beautifully made items, who had used them, what they'd seen unfold, and who had loved these items and handled them with such care that they had survived their unique journeys and ended in my grandparents' home.
To be moved by, and live with, fine antiques, is to understand, at a deep level, what a valuable transmitter they are of the stories, memories and aesthetic values we hold dear and want to pass down to future generations. Leslie Carothers

What Moves Me
I fell madly in love with antiques when I was a teenager living in Europe. My Spanish grandparents had wonderful pieces from various periods, but my favorites were the Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern furniture and decor. As I got older, my passion for antiques expanded beyond furniture to art, books, photographs, fashion, jewelry and documents. As a matter of fact, one of the biggest thrills in antiquing came when I was 17 and shopping a French flea market nestled along the border with Germany. I had the incredible fortune to acquire several 18th century land deeds at that market. Decades later that moment of sheer joy still moves me in ways that little else possibly can. To hold in my hands something that allows me reach back into history on such a personal level is absolutely priceless. Carmen Natschke

My whole design philosophy and what I've built my business on revolves around the intersection of contemporary design and antiques. My trademark style is called "Modernique" and it blends the best of the past with new and emerging trends of the present for a contemporary look. I'm always on the hunt for fabulous antiques and vintage design so it goes without saying that nothing moves me more than discovering the perfect piece that I can either use in its present condition or re-envision with contemporary fabrics, colors or textures. FASHION AND HOME DECOR: EXPLORING CREATIVE LINKS

What Moves Me:
The Antiques & Design Center is always a highlight of my High Point Market. I always go early as the most stunning pieces go quickly (John Roselli has an amazing eye and moves quickly!) and I return at least a few times during market. I invariably notice items on my second and third visit that I missed on my first jaunt through the showrooms. Some of my favorite dealers, such as Caroline Faison, Ben Cochrane, Kenny Ball, Lola & Bess, Madcap Cottage, and many others always have artifacts that excite my eye and stimulate me as a design historian. I particularly love the exquisite couture pieces by Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, and the important collection of Judith Leiber handbags from Maxine Wolff Shapiro Antiques and Estate Jewelry. I love using vintage couture as objet d'art.
Antiques add instant character and depth to interior designs and can also convey wonderful stories based on their provenance. In my opinion there should be at least one antique in each room if a house is to have the 'soul' that only comes with fine craftsmanship and survival over time. The ADC has an incredibly broad range of options from the past four centuries. There are also some wonderful paintings in the mix. The Antiques & Design Center represents a great learning opportunity for young designers. -

What Moves Me:
When I land in High Point, I rush straight from the airport to the Antique & Design Center--first stop--before designers and the trade can claim the best finds.
As a home decor/design industry insider and trend expert I review tens of thousands of products and antique finds each year, many of which can start to look the same from show to show and showroom to showroom. I get a giddy rush when I pass through the doors into the Antique and Design Center-knowing that I will see some of the most unique and well-priced items of the antique season. For work I attend most of the major antique & design shows around the United States and none have as high a concentration of one-of-a-kind items for picker-type pricing.
It is truly the only show I ever buy anything at to keep for my own private antique collection. As a professional antique dealer that is the highest compliment. -

Science maintains that we dream in black and white, but I distinctly remember not only dreaming in color, but dreaming about color. Color is my home; I love the way it wraps you up and transports you to another frame of mind. For me, design is about finding that unique balance between what the client needs out of the space and what that space dreams of being. I'm drawn to fusion of the old with the new, the classic with the edgy, and the dependable with the whimsical. My favorite spaces aren't rooms, they're emotions! -

WHO: Lauryn Preller grew up with an extensive background in art and an innate love for all things color. In college, she honed her analytical, drawing, and design skills, graduating with a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Maryland in 2011. She was fortunate enough to study abroad in the U.K. to expand her knowledge of garden design, architecture, and interior design. After graduation, she moved on to freelance work in the residential sector, creating construction documents and getting the respective permits for a small contractor. It was then she met a local color consultant and began working in-store with clients, mixing paint, and learning about Benjamin Moore's extensive palette of over 3500 colors.
Eventually, Lauryn branched off to run her own color consultation company. She took on the mantle of entrepreneur in 2013. That same summer she also enjoyed an internship at the capital office for Aecom, where she followed a 2 million dollar project in the Justice Studio from initial concept to bid. With her diverse work history in hardware retail, architecture, and the unique field of color consultation, she developed a very sensitive eye for color acuity and an appreciation for quality paint. These experiences, coupled with her deep passion for the transformative power of color have led to her current position as Design Program Specialist with Benjamin Moore.

What moves me at the Antique and Design Center of High Point is what moves me in the world of vintage and antique design - the thrill of the hunt! There is something to be said of the idea of surprise. Walking into the premier antique and vintage showroom at High Point, the Antique and Design Center, one finds surprises at each and every turn. Whether it is the rare, the sublime, the unique - the thrill of the hunt always leads me to be moved!
Once again this fall market, I have the pleasure of setting up and selling among a vetted group of well over 80 top dealers in antique and vintage finds. Each market since my debut in April 2013, I've found myself marveling at the treasures in the booths of my colleagues. WHAT: Framing History in Design: A Historical Perspective of the Frame over Its 600 year evolution. To frame or not to frame?: Heather will be discussing the current importance of picture frames as a design element in interior space. The picture frame has long been an integral design element to both the work of art it contained as well as to the space in which it was displayed. It was often even created by the artist to be an integral part of the completed work of art! The design of these frames was a reflection of the prevailing taste of the times. The initial works had ties to benefactors, usually being the church, and were designed to recreate the architecture of their surroundings. The frame truly came into its own during the reign of Louis XIII as an ornament, a jewel. Fast forward to the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and the frame is now truly part of the overall space being crafted by the designer. Today's architects and designers have an unlimited resource in the picture frame. Choosing the correct one can elevate the value of a piece or devalue the piece, depending on choice.

A stroll through the Antique and Design Center is incredibly awe-inspiring! Being surrounded by a marvelous variety of period antiques ranging from Industrial to Mid-Century Modern, I can't help but think how each piece conveys its story to me. Each vintage or antique object, in a way that no new object can, tells an enchanting history of creation and ownership, a passion for design and a pride of workmanship unique in each and every item. I am truly moved on an emotional and mental level when in the presence of a storied piece. Emotionally, I'm touched by the object's aesthetics. Mentally, I am transported through history to a time and place in which the object came to life and was used. - David Lindquist
